Updated: Jun 29, 2023

People walking for exercise

As personal trainers we tend to move and exercise, a lot. However not everyone has active jobs. Living in a time period where prolonged sitting is very frequent, we are often very susceptible to cracking joints, back/neck pain, and fatigue. However, what if there was a solution that could lower the chances of these symptoms of prolonged sitting from occurring? Luckily, there is. Walking. Walking, a simple, yet a very beneficial task when it comes to lowering the risk of experiencing pain or fatigue from prolonged sitting.

According to a study conducted at Columbia University, walking for five minutes every 30 minutes of sitting can help lead to many health benefits. Based on their results of this experiment, the blood pressure and blood sugar of the participants lowered significantly. According to Science News Daily, participants’ blood sugar was able to decrease 58%, thus lowering the risk of sugar spikes.

Not only that, but according to the Cleveland Clinic, walking every 30 minutes of sitting can help lower the risk of pain experienced in joints due to how it keeps our joints flexible between sitting sessions.

Overall, whether you are to walk five minutes or one, walking in between sitting sessions has many health benefits.
