What Carbs Are -

Carbohydrates are fuel for your brain and muscles, a primary source of energy. According to Harvard School of Public Health -

Foods high in carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet. Carbohydrates provide the body with glucose, which is converted to energy used to support bodily functions and physical activity.

What Carbs Are Not -

They are not the enemy when it comes to fat loss unless you have blood sugar issues.

While carbs are not "bad" there are different types that may affect you differently.

Carbs break down into glucose, which is our most important fuel source. If we don’t eat carbs our body will work harder to turn fats and proteins into fuel. Avoiding carbs can make us “hangry, irritable and unsatisfied."

What about with exercise?

Eating carbs before and after our workouts is desirable to fuel our workouts and to restore depleted glycogen. Pair about 25-30 grams with 25-30 grams of protein. (depending on body weight). This is the time to eat “starchy” carbs such as rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, quinoa and sprouted grain breads.

The fiber in vegetables and fruits helps to move food through the digestive tract and reduces serum Cholesterol. Your fiber carbs don't have to count toward your total net for the day if tracking your food or macros.

So, in short, healthy, non-processed carbohydrates that are not loaded with processed sugar are an essential part of our diet. Time them around the most active part of your day, eat proper portions and enjoy your health & fitness journey!
